Abstract: Social phobia significantly impacts children’s social and academic functioning. This study examines the association between parental substance abuse and social phobia using data from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). Results show that parental substance abuse is significantly associated with social phobia, even after controlling for parental antisocial behavior. While maternal and paternal substance abuse both elevate the risk, differences between their effects are not statistically significant. Females show a slightly higher risk than males. These findings highlight parental substance abuse as a key risk factor and the need for further research into its mechanisms.
